Q: Will there be alligators? Are they dangerous?
A: You may see alligators, but normally they are only dangerous when harassed. In reality, alligators are rather timid, unless you're a fish. They do live in and around the river, and if you're lucky enough to see one or more, they're very likely to be leisurely sunning themselves on a log. A 10-foot kayak is as frightening to them as they are to you. Of course, they will defend themselves if threatened and it is foolish to approach or provoke them.
Q: How will we know when we have reached the end of the run at Wimbrow Park?
A: The river widens significantly as you approach the end of the run. Wimbrow Park is easy to spot on the right with its boat launch, gazebo, and playground.
Q: How will you know when to meet us at the end of the trip?
A: When you see Riverside Church on your right, call us on your cell phone at (772) 589-3469 and we will meet you at Wimbrow Park when you arrive about 15 minutes later.
Note: To help keep your phone safe, we have zip-lock bags. At least one dropped phone floated because the bag was filled with air!
Q: Are there any unusual twists and turns to navigate?
A. The St. Sebastian River is easy to navigate. Just be sure, when you get to a cypress tree with a very unusual trunk, that you go left to continue toward Wimbrow Park.
Q: What is the best time to go out?
A: The river is beautiful at all times of day, but to make the most of your trip and maximize your comfort, we recommend leaving early to enjoy the pleasant morning temperatures, especially during the summer. We open at 9:00 am Monday through Saturday and 10:00 am on Sunday.
Q: Do we need reservations?
A: Reservations are requested for large groups of 11 to 30 people and are required for guided tours and photo safaris. For self-tours of up to 10 people, we just ask that you call 15 minutes ahead so we can load your kayak(s) and gear and get you out on the river without delay.
Q: Do we need to leave a deposit?
A: No deposit is necessary.
Q: Should I call before we come to the office?
A: Yes, we like to get everything ready so we are ready to go when you arrive. Please call 15 minutes before your arrival for self-tours and 24 hours in advance for large groups (11-30), guided tours, and photo safaris.
Q: Should I bring anything in particular?
A: You may want to wear shoes that you don't mind getting wet, and may like to have some drinking water and sunscreen that's safe for people and the planet.
Q: What if we don't want to paddle for three hours?
A: We have multiple launch sites so we can modify your kayaking experience to suit you.
Q: Are there different rates for kayaking based on time?
A: No. You may stay on the water for as long as you'd like (up to 5:00 pm on weekdays) without the concern of additional costs. Please see our Hours of Operation below and return 30 minutes before closing, unless otherwise arranged.
